I can relate fully, and your post is an inspiration to many, esp 90+% of "middle-class" America in the same boat !

I look forward to your next post, especially how God lent a hand in guiding you.

Live on less than you make, pay cash for everything, and don't don't go into debt. No one should expect the government to care for them in old age. It's really pretty simple. The problem is, us Westerners have a sense of entitlement and need need need everything now.

i will need my meager SS check in 25+ years. I paid in, I expect something back.

haha - good luck to me.

Malcolm, I am saddened to hear there is no retirement fairy...really puts a kink in my plans.

I guess I am lucky that I have shed a lot of my material things in the move to Thailand and think about life now in a more experience way then material way.

Most people don't get to retire anymore and if they do I doubt they are enjoying their retirement as much as you are Malcolm...

It sounds like you are enjoying a better retirement in Thailand than you would have been able to in the USA.
Do people really live in that tower of caravans? What happens when the wind blows!

looking forward to the next posting too ..... we sit here waiting to see what eventuates!!

Shattered my dreams though, was so sure there would be a 'retirement fairy', oh well, will see what you next posting suggests. :-)

We know our retirement $$ will not support us in Singapore, so we need to keep our eyes and ears open too for another solution....

you must have the answer to a retirement on the cheap: you've made it. congratulations and best wishes. I read your blog for some time and I really enjoy it very much.

Malcolm I guess I'm in the same kind of boat you sailed up to retirement in. I'm plugging holes and baling water with 16 more years of choppy waters still to navigate. I reckon I'll just run the old tugboat aground one day and settle for a life in the sun, come what may.

I don't think I can take sixteen years of thinking about being somewhere I want to be but financial restrictions mean I can't cut and comfortably run. If you have to survive you'll survive, I guess that's the policy I'll take when I leave the tugboat for good.

I'm hoping to shout "land ahoy" in a couple of years time, I just need to fill my treasure chest a little bit more.

Good post.

On a sidenote....why don't you put Google AdSense onto your blog, the earnings might not be great but every little helps.

Interesting post, and nice to see you back in the blogosphere again.

Good post and series, Malcolm. If I may add something from my experience, which is little, really.

I am fortunate that I worked for the same company for 28 years and will have a good enough pension for Thailand. But if anything major occurs such as need to fly home or loss of vehicle, should I be able to buy one, then a pension is not going to cover that.

However, you've shown what you can do with your income and managed to be living an apparently happy life. It's inspiring. More power to you, sir!
